On April 11-12, 2024, Dr. Greta Gober represented the Managing Newsroom Diversity project at the “Ethical, Smart and Safe: Navigating the Digital World of Tomorrow” conference in Warsaw. Organized as part of the 65th anniversary of the Fulbright Program in Poland, the event gathered media professionals, researchers, and policymakers to discuss ethical challenges in the digital age.
A highlight of the conference was Session I: “Quality Journalism in Diverse Newsrooms,” where Dr. Gober joined an expert panel to explore the importance of diverse voices in the media and its impact on journalistic standards.
The Importance of Diversity in Journalism
The panel, chaired by Joanna Stempień (TVN24 BIS), addressed critical questions on representation in media, comparing approaches in Poland, Europe, and the USA.
Discussions focused on:
- What representation in media means today and the barriers to achieving it.
- How newsroom diversity shapes journalistic quality by ensuring more comprehensive and accurate news coverage.
- The link between representation and public trust, questioning whether diverse teams lead to greater media credibility.
Expert Perspectives on Media Representation
The panel featured insights from professionals working at the intersection of journalism, media studies, and diversity:
- Dr. Greta Gober (Managing Newsroom Diversity project) – Spoke about power dynamics in news production and how diversity management can be leveraged as an innovation in journalism.
- Dr. Margaret Amaka Ohia-Nowak (Assistant Professor at the Institute of Communication and Media Studies at the Marie Curie-Sklodowska University in Lublin) – Addressed issues of race and representation in Polish media and the role of inclusive language.
- Graham Griffith (Fulbright U.S. Scholar, Center for the Study of Democracy, Bulgaria) – Shared insights on supporting underrepresented voices in media and strengthening journalistic practices.
The discussion emphasized that diversity is not just an ethical priority, but a strategic necessity for journalistic credibility and innovation.
Bridging Research and Media Practice
Dr. Gober’s participation highlights the Managing Newsroom Diversity project’s ongoing efforts to connect academic research with industry practices. By engaging in high-level discussions like this, the project continues to provide insights into how diversity can be effectively implemented in media organizations.
