The event was titled \u201cReorganization of Media Industries: Digital Transformation, Entrepreneurship and Regulation\u201d gathered more than 100 scholars and practitioners from Europe and beyond. The overall goal of the conference was to discuss change management in media industries in the aftermath of the digital and data-driven transformations. The conference organizers offered a wide range of formal and informal knowledge sharing events at the Macromedia University, Microsoft headquarters and Augustinekeller \u2013 one of the oldest beer gardens in Munich.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The EMMA conference 2022 featured keynote speeches by Claudia Loebbecke (Cologne University, Germany), Tom Evens (Ghent University, Belgium), Eli Noam (Columbia University, USA) and Andy Beach (Microsoft Corporate). The sharing of scholarly and practical media industry knowledge was followed by over thirty thematic parallel sessions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Findings from the Norway-grants funded \u201cDiversity management as innovation in journalism\u201d research project were disseminated in the \u201cGuidance and Diversity in Media\u201d session organized on June 17, 2022. Our contribution was titled \u201cPolyphony and Voice Plurality: How Newsrooms Innovate to Manage Diversity\u201d and it aimed to evaluate examples of existing on and off-screen media industry diversity measures from the perspective of \u2018polyphony\u2019.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">We argued that cultural organizational approach can help advance the theory and methodology of managing newsroom diversity via the lens of polyphony and the plurality of voices (Trittin and Schoeneborn, 2017). Following Trittin and Schoeneborn, we argued this approach can help enrich existing works on diversity management in both the instrumental and critical traditions of research on diversity management. Stressing the link between diversity management and polyphony focuses on enabling communicative processes within the newsroom that allow marginalized and culturally different \u2018voices\u2019 to speak out, be respected and heard in the newsrooms (and hence the media). The organization can tap into the innovative and creative potential of bringing together diverse viewpoints, experiences, and knowledge.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">We thank session participants, who raised comments and questions to move our theoretical work forward. The goal of the meeting has been to introduce the project network and discuss indicative feedback on theoretical and methodological foundations from media diversity experts across the countries studied.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph {\"fontSize\":\"medium\"} -->\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">As a follow-up of mapping media industries and the diversity-first media practices (September 2021\u2013November 2021), our focus has naturally turned into an update and a critical review of the project\u2019s methodology. Following the creation of the project\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/managingnewsroomdiversity.com\/team\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/managingnewsroomdiversity.com\/team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Advisory Board,&nbsp;<\/a>we run a meeting to address&nbsp;research goals and qualitative methods involved. The meeting was organised on December 13, 2021, at the Faculty of Journalism, Information and Book Studies, the University of Warsaw. However, most of our experts took part in the discussions online due to pandemic restrictions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph {\"fontSize\":\"medium\"} -->\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The meeting started with introducing the research team and the Advisory Board members alongside a presentation of the study foundations by Greta Gober \u2013 the principal project investigator. In her 20-minutes provocation, Greta spoke about the urgency of newsrooms\u2019 diversity as innovation, as the content-driven community-oriented organisational processes blend. Greta spoke about the existing knowledge gap through her previous experience researching gender and media, which would advance business-driven and value-based approaches to diversity. The idea of exploring diversity management via the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/managingnewsroomdiversity.com\/about-project\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/managingnewsroomdiversity.com\/about-project\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">polyphony of newsrooms\u2019 voices&nbsp;<\/a>opened the floor for feedback and discussions.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph {\"fontSize\":\"medium\"} -->\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Overall, we agreed that researching newsroom diversity is a process that goes beyond media inclusive HR policies or media content addressing people with disabilities, ethics, language, race, gender, sexual orientation, and so on. One of our experts \u2013 professor Karen Donders from the Flemish public service media VRT \u2013 stressed that managing diversity is a blend of instrumental and normative views reflected in media policies, strategies and production. To this end, polyphony \u2013 the outcome of a representative and inclusive media organisation requires, above all, inclusive storylines, diversity leadership and supportive organisational culture (see Figure 1). Looking at the project\u2019s methodology, there was a clear direction to focus on in-depth case studies and maybe look for good practices beyond three countries (Poland, Sweden, the United Kingdom)?&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph {\"fontSize\":\"medium\"} -->\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">We thank Margaret Amaka Ohia-Nowak (The Diversity Hub, Poland), Christian Christensen (Stockholm University, Sweden), Sandra Suber (Axel Springer SE, Germany) and Karen Donders (VRT, Belgium) for valued comments on how to move forward.
